Benjamin Netanyahu is Israel's longest-serving prime minister, in office 1996–1999, 2009–2021 and since December 2022, and has led Likud since 2005 (and earlier 1993–1999). Born in Tel Aviv, he served in the Sayeret Matkal commando unit and was ambassador to the United Nations (1984–1988) before entering the Knesset in 1988. He has also served as foreign minister and finance minister. He has been on trial since 2020 on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust, which he denies, and led the government through the war that began on 7 October 2023.
Likud member since the 1980s; party chairman 1993–1999 and since December 2005.
