Yair Golan is a retired IDF major general who served as Deputy Chief of the General Staff (2014–2017) after heading the Home Front Command and Northern Command. He entered politics in 2019, was an MK for the Democratic Union and Meretz, and served as Deputy Minister of Economy in 2021–2022. He was elected Labor Party leader in May 2024 and leads The Democrats, the merged Labor–Meretz party, which he heads into the 2026 election.
Co-founded the Israel Democratic Party with Ehud Barak (2019), which ran in the Democratic Union alliance; then revived Democratic Choice (2020) and joined Meretz (December 2020). After Meretz missed the threshold in 2022 he won the Labor leadership (May 2024) and led the Labor–Meretz merger into The Democrats (agreed 30 June 2024).
