Translation #ינוניז Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu approached Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a short while ago demanding that a draft resolution be brought to the upcoming government meeting under which the law, jurisdiction and administration of the State of Israel will apply to the Solomon's Pools compound, and that it be transferred to full Israeli responsibility. The request comes following an official event held by the Palestinian Authority at the site, during which the place was presented as a Palestinian national asset and a call was made to deepen the Palestinian presence there.

Translation Minister Amichai Eliyahu on the hearing for Yehuda Eliyahu: "I have enormous appreciation for Yehuda Eliyahu, and I truly believe he has the abilities, the experience and the vision to fundamentally change the cumbersome system of the Israel Land Authority, and I very much want him to be there. On the other hand, I cannot understand, and certainly cannot accept, the campaign he is now personally waging over the head of the minister in charge, Haim Katz. The national camp cannot hold the rope at both ends. For years the right has cried out, and rightly so, against 'the rule of the bureaucrats' and the harm to governability. You can't fight this phenomenon when it comes from the legal system or the legal advisers, but give it backing the moment the official holds a worldview we like. Either we are a real democracy in which the sovereign decides, or we keep playing make-believe. The official (the bureaucrat) is required to be an objective professional whose job is to translate the politician's will into action. The moment the official replaces the politician in setting policy – the system collapses. This rule must be color-blind. It holds for Yehuda Eliyahu at the Israel Land Authority, and it holds just as much for the IDF chief of staff, the head of the Shin Bet and the police commissioner. The professional echelon can advise, warn and present alternatives – but at the end of the day, it must carry out the minister's policy. An official, however senior and talented, who acts against the minister in charge of him or refuses to implement his policy – should do the honorable thing, pack his things, join a party and run at the ballot box. Until then, democracy means the rule of the people through its elected representatives, and not the rule of administrators. Alternatively, the prime minister should do the honorable thing and find a way to move the office under another minister, or get the minister in charge to carry out government policy. Any other way, which strengthens officials at the expense of elected representatives, mortally harms democracy."
