A lawyer and former cabinet secretary, he was a senior Likud figure who served as education minister (2009–2013) and interior minister (2013–2014). He left Likud in December 2020 to found New Hope, served as justice minister and deputy prime minister in the Bennett–Lapid government, and ran with Benny Gantz's National Unity in 2022 before rejoining Netanyahu's government in 2024. New Hope merged back into Likud under an agreement approved in August 2025, and Sa'ar holds a reserved slot on the 2026 list.

Translation Former minister Ron Dermer: "I support what Gideon Sa'ar did, and commend him for being both "right" and "smart" – standing on principles through an unprecedented decision to close a consulate in Jerusalem, but doing so in a way that limits the diplomatic consequences and leaves Israel tools to respond to further British action against us or to improve Israel-UK relations if Britain changes direction".

Translation Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar: We established a clear principle – it is not possible to act against Israel without Israel taking appropriate countermeasures. In this spirit, the steps I announced on September 8 have been implemented: 1. Removal of the British representatives from the international aid center for Gaza in Kiryat Gat. 2. Ending the British activity of training Palestinian Authority forces in Judea and Samaria. 3. Barring entry to Israel of 12 elected officials and other British citizens involved in antisemitic and anti-Israeli activity and those who deny the very existence of the State of Israel. 4. The British consulate in Jerusalem ends its activity today. Accordingly, the sign of the British consulate in Jerusalem has been removed. We didn't want to get to this, but the actions of the Labour government led us here. The latest decision in the series was to initiate a series of far-reaching sanctions against the settlements in Judea and Samaria, as well as additional sanctions concerning the expansion of the suspension of defense export licenses to Israel. All this, alongside hostile rhetoric that includes false accusations against Israel, such as "ethnic cleansing". This decision joins a growing and escalating series of unilateral steps against Israel adopted by the Labour government since it took office in July 2024. These steps included, among others, unilateral recognition of a virtual "Palestinian state" in September 2025; renewed funding for UNRWA; suspension of defense export licenses to Israel; imposing sanctions on Israeli ministers; imposing sanctions on Israeli individuals and entities; suspension of negotiations on a free trade agreement; restricting Israel's official participation in an international defense and security equipment exhibition in Britain; freezing military dialogue and security cooperation; barring IDF officers from participating in a course at the Royal College of Defence Studies; repeated, tendentious and one-sided attacks against Israel in the international arena. In the past week we held a dialogue with the British government with the aim of preventing further escalation in relations between the countries due to the closure of the consulate. Last night we reached understandings based on the following principles: 1. As I announced - the British consulate in Jerusalem ended its function today. The consul general and 20 diplomats (including the consul general) are ending their posts and will leave Israel. 2. The building that served the consulate is the property of the British government. We have authorized the British government to operate in the building, which has ceased today to serve as a consulate, a task team of only 7 diplomats with a very limited scope of activity. 3. We agreed on a continued dialogue between the governments, in which both sides will be able to raise the issues important to each of them. We believe in dialogue and will continue to believe in dialogue. Unfortunately, in recent years there has been no real dialogue with the Labour government. This, despite good relations with Britain, which are expressed among other things in security and intelligence cooperation. Relations between Israel and Britain are important, and have proven their value time and again, including in protecting the lives and interests of British citizens. Just recently Israel passed Britain vital information in the RAF Fairford affair. All four steps in my statement of September 8 - have been implemented. Alongside this, we reached understandings that serve Israeli interests. In accordance with the understandings we reached, no steps will be taken against Israel as a result of implementing the decisions. I thank everyone who engaged in the dialogue and the discussion and contributed to reaching understandings on both sides. I cannot promise that there will not be further crises in the future. If there are - we will face them on the basis of our principles. It is important to emphasize again that it was not we who initiated the current crisis. We are interested in good relations with all the countries of the world. But any country that acts against Israel should know that there will be a price for it. It will not profit from it, on the contrary. The period of Israeli containment is over - on both the security and the diplomatic level.
