Aryeh Deri (born 1959 in Meknes, Morocco) is a co-founder and the chairman of Shas. He served as Interior Minister from 1988 to 1993, was convicted of bribery, fraud and breach of trust and served 22 months in prison (released 2002), and returned to lead Shas from 2013. He later held the Economy, Negev and Galilee, Interior and Health portfolios; after a 2022 tax-offence plea deal the Supreme Court ruled in January 2023 that he could not serve as a minister. He heads the Shas list for the 2026 election.
Shas co-founder (1984) and its political leader for most of its history; party chairman again since 2013. Entered the Knesset in 1992, resigned in 1999 after his conviction, returned in 2013. Resigned from the Knesset in January 2022 under a plea deal and returned at the head of the list in 2022. Shas ministers quit the Netanyahu government in July 2025 over the Haredi draft law.
