אני רואה מהבוקר שיש מי ששמחים ומתדרכים כי הטלטלה ב'דגל התורה' עשויה לשנות את הברית החרדית עם גוש הימין ועם נתניהו. אז בואו נפוצץ את הבלון. אין לחרדים אפשרות או עם מי ללכת בגוש השמאל. למעשה את ההכרזות הריקות והאיומים על הליכה עם השמאל גפני משמיע כבר שנים וכמעט בכל מערכת בחירות. ב-2015 הוא הצהיר ש"אם הרצוג יצליח להקים ממשלה - נתמוך בו", אח"כ אמר שהוא לא פוסל את גנץ, ושהתמיכה של יהדות התורה בנתניהו אינה אוטומטית, ולאחרונה הבהיר ש"בניגוד לעבר" הפעם "אני לא עונה מראש שאני הולך עם נתניהו". בינתיים, ולמרבה האירוניה הוא אכן הולך אבל לא עם נתניהו... האמירות המטופשות הללו היו אגב, זרז לנטישת צעירים חרדים את יהדות התורה ומעבר במספרים שלא היו בעבר לאלטרנטיבות כמו הליכוד ועוצמה יהודית. לגבי חוק הגיוס. זה נכון אמנם שנתניהו מרח את הזמן בתחילת הקדנציה, כשלא טרח להעביר את החוק לפני התקציב כפי שהתחייב בהסכם הקואליציוני, אבל צריך לזכור שמי שסיכל את החוק בסוף היו החרדים. גם לו רצו, החרדים לא יכולים לשבת בממשלת שמאל. עם מי יישבו בדיוק? עם מנסור עבאס ויאיר גולן? עם ליברמן והמריצה? עם גלעד קריב, הרפורמים והלהט"ב? אז נכון שכשהשמאל רוצה יש פח מיוחד לאידאולוגיה ויש דף לבן ריק, אבל עכשיו הדף כבר שחור ומלא. שחור משנאה ומלא בגידופים ובהתחייבויות. אז תאמרו מיד, נוכחנו שהתחייבויות זה לא משהו שיעצור בעדם. כדי להזיז את נתניהו הם יסכימו להכל - כולל הכל. עקרונית נכון ויותר מכך, אבל משתי הסיבות העיקריות שמניתי לעיל אין לכך שום היתכנות ריאלית. מצד שמאל - אחרי 07 באוקטובר וקמפיין הרעל שניהלו הם מסונדלים בעניין חוק הגיוס. הם לא יוכלו לתת הצעה טובה יותר משהייתה על השולחן בחודשים האחרונים. (שכזכור אפילו אותה החרדים טרפדו) ומצד החרדים - מעבר לגיוס, אין היתכנות לשבת בקואליציה של שונאי דת רדיקלים, שהבטחותה הבחירות שלהם זה לחרב, לחלל ולטמא את כל הקדוש והיקר. מקווה שח"כ אשר והנציגים החדשים במפלגה ידלגו הפעם על הקשקוש המעיק הזה, יתמקדו בעשיה חיובית ומועילה ויפנימו גם כי הציבור שאותו הם מייצגים הוא ימני ברובו המוחלט.

Even if they wanted to, the Haredim can't sit in a left-wing government. With whom exactly would they sit? With Mansour Abbas and Yair Golan? With Liberman and the wheelbarrow? With Gilad Kariv, the Reform and the LGBT? So it's true that when the left wants, there's a special trash bin for ideology and there's a blank white page, but now the page is already black and full. Black with hatred and full of insults and commitments. So you'll say right away, we've seen that commitments are not something that will stop them. To move Netanyahu they'll agree to anything - including everything. In principle true and more than that, but for the two main reasons I listed above there is no realistic feasibility for it. I hope MK Asher and the new representatives in the party will skip this tiresome nonsense this time, focus on positive and useful work and also internalize that the public they represent is overwhelmingly right-wing.

A serious, apolitical researcher who doesn't dirty himself in this arena, even if there are quite a few trying to drag him into it by force, to paint him in political colors and to plant in people's minds that he belongs to a research institute identified with Netanyahu (complete bullshit), while Bergman himself writes and is interviewed on sites and channels identified with the left par excellence, whether in Israel or abroad. The reason for this is of course quite simple - Yehonatan documented and is documenting the period that preceded the October 7, 2023 attack. I recommend that anyone interested in the subject follow him on Twitter and read the documentation of that period, and every post includes a link to the source, unlike the practice of most journalists. This clean documentation by Yehonatan, full quotes attributed to those who said them - threatens those who pray for the downfall of the right, all the more so on the eve of the election. @jdhalevi But within all this verbiage Bergman omits a small and not exactly marginal detail: That "brigadier general who passed away", Amit Saar, Allah yerhamo and God forgive me, was head of the Research Division of Military Intelligence on the eve of the massacre. That is, the man who headed the body most directly entrusted with forming the intelligence picture and giving warning of war. One clear warning on the night between October 6 and 7 could have changed the entire picture of preparedness. And the question of what Saar's conception was regarding containment, escalation and surprise is not an academic curiosity from 2019. It is a very essential question for understanding the state of mind in which the system operated on the eve of the greatest disaster in the history of the State of Israel. And while Bergman comfortably clings to the fact that the exact phrase "maximum containment" doesn't appear in the booklet, and even claims that the meaning Dahoah-Halevi attributes to it isn't found in it either, he somehow skips over a tiny detail: Saar has a chapter titled "Managing escalation and spaces of containment". Saar himself writes about "demonstrative restraint in responses" in order to "create a dynamic of containment", and later, in the discussion of capabilities and how to employ them, about flexibility "even at the expense of surprise" in order to "create a space of containment". That is, Dahoah-Halevi didn't invent the concept of containment out of thin air and didn't put it in Saar's mouth. The term is in the text itself, again and again. He presented his conclusion from the words separately and explicitly as implied by Saar's words. One can argue with the inference, but one cannot turn containment itself, which is written there in black and white, into Dahoah-Halevi's invention. I'll leave the full analysis of his words and of the conception reflected in them to a platform that allows real elaboration. But even before that it's worth recalling that in 2022 too, long after the research paper and when Saar was already serving as head of the Research Division, he said regarding Gaza: "No one wants a war in Gaza. Hamas proves it every day". That is, the discussion of his conception is not an attempt to take an old thesis and forcibly stick it onto October 7. There is here at the very least a conceptual continuity that is worth, and even obligatory, examining against the warning failure. Erez Tadmor doesn't need my defense, so I'm setting aside everything Bergman wrote about him. But there's another fact worth remembering - Saar himself referred on several occasions on the eve of October 7 to the internal situation in Israel and its security implications, one of whose derivatives was also refusal to serve. Except that his gaze was directed mainly northward. And Yehonatan Dahoah-Halevi? He didn't invent a "doctrine", didn't write a script and didn't put words in Saar's mouth. He brought from Saar's 2019 research booklet Saar's own words, in quotation marks and attributed to him, and openly laid his interpretation on top of them. Contrary to the impression Bergman strains and sweats to establish, Dahoah-Halevi did not lay down the law. He did not support conspiracy theories. On the contrary. On the matter of containment he noted that the commission of inquiry should examine whether this conception was also valid on October 7, 2023. And if Bergman, horrified to the depths of his soul, reads those same quotes, is horrified by the conclusion and rushes to explain to us that they don't indicate "containment" - apparently he too understands very well why whoever reads them might reach exactly that conclusion.
