Desalination made Israel a world leader and allowed an arid country to cope with water shortage. But when desalination stops - because of pollution, missiles, cyber, extreme climate events or any other reason - Israel is supposed to rely on plan B: the Sea of Galilee, groundwater and wells. 🟦 And what's our situation there? The Sea of Galilee is below the lower red line, many wells have been closed over the years because of pollution, and the rehabilitation of groundwater sources is progressing too slowly. "Adam Teva V'Din" and environmental organizations have been warning for years that the wells and groundwater must not be neglected, and that they must be preserved as a strategic backup. 🔴 Did Silman, who treated environmental organizations as if they were the enemy, really take care of our environmental resilience and of future generations? Apparently not. 🔴 In a country like Israel, which is riddled with threats and crises, we've reached a situation in which our backup sources are weakened even though preparing for such a scenario is part of national security. 2️⃣ Did we save in the wrong place? Water security costs money. Water from the Sea of Galilee and groundwater can be cheaper than desalinated water. But if we use the natural sources today instead of rehabilitating and preserving them as a reserve - we're left with less backup for the day the desalination plants stop. 🟦 At the end of 2024 this was exactly the debate, at the end of which it was decided to reduce the amount of desalinated water to be purchased in 2025, among other things to moderate the rise in the water tariff. A few months later, the chairman of the State Control Committee, MK Mickey Levy, already warned that the cut in desalination could endanger the water supply. 🔴 But the populist Energy Minister Eli Cohen repeatedly put curbing the price of water at the center of his policy. And so he owes an answer to a simple question: did you protect the price for the coming month — or the water security of the next decade? Bottom line: 🔴 You can't separate environmental and climate resilience, infrastructure resilience and national resilience. More importantly: the water sector is just one example. This event should be a test case for every critical system in Israel: is there a backup? Are there reserves? Is there a real alternative for the day routine breaks down? Water security is not a privilege of "environment lovers," it's pure national security, and it's a pity the other side doesn't understand this.
