שני אנשים תרמו השבוע תרומה גדולה לשיח הציבורי בישראל: אבינתן אור וברט מקגורגק. אחד העביר את המלחמה במנהרות חמאס, השני בבית הלבן. שניהם הציגו השבוע בלשון בהירה, מלב ההתרחשויות עצמן, שתי עמדות שעד עתה הוצגו בארץ כאכילת מוות, פוליטיקה צינית והפקרת חטופים. אור, חטוף שנתיים במנהרות עזה, הסביר בעברית פשוטה מדוע עסקאות לא פרופורציונליות עם חמאס רק יביאו עוד חטיפות בעתיד. מקגורק, יועצו הבכיר של ביידן, הסביר באנגלית פשוטה שממילא אף עסקה כזו לא עמדה באמת על השולחן עד שהחרב הצבאית הייתה על צווארו של ארגון הטרור. צפיתי באבינתן אור ב״עובדה״ והתביישתי שוב ביחס שניתן לאמא שלו, דיצה אור, בזמן אמת על שהעזה לומר אותם הדברים. היא והורים אחרים מפורום תקווה הוצגו כמפקירי ילדיהם, ואילו מי שדחפו לכניעה - כמעין הורים מאמצים של חטופינו. הייתה זו דוגמא נוספת לעיוות שלפיו מי שהביאו את החטופים הם לא החיילים שחירפו את נפשם בעזה אלא אלה שהפגינו בדרישה להיעתר לדרישות חמאס (דרישות שכאמור, מעולם לא באמת התגבשו לכלל הצעה). נזכרתי גם באלחנן קלמנזון שנפל בבארי בבוקר שמונה באוקטובר, ושחודשים קודם לכן, באחת ההפגנות בקפלן, מישהו צעק לעברו ״יא משתמט״, כי ראה את הכיפה שלו. חלקים מסוימים באגף הזה לא משקיעים שום מאמץ בויכוח, רק בניסיון למסגר את הדעה השניה כבלתי לגיטימית. האזנתי לברט מקגרגור בשורת ראיונות ונזכרתי שוב כמה שטחי השיח שלנו, כמה מוטה. רק בעולם כזה יכול ניצן אלון, שעמד בראש המנהלת הצה״לית לנושא החטופים, לשחרר לאוויר העולם ציטוטים כמו ״אפשר היה לשחרר את כולם קודם״, בלי להידרש לעובדות. בעולם כזה ניתן לפרסם ספרים ו״תחקירים״ שמציגים את חמאס כשוחר עסקאות ואילו ישראל רעת הלב, המנוכרת, הנחושה להילחם לנצח. למשפחות חטופים מותר בזמן אמת להגיד הכל (אלא אם מדובר במשפחות אור ומור, כמובן), אבל לפרשנים ולמומחים גם האמת היא אופציה. במבחן התוצאה, ובניגוד לכל ההאשמות והתחזיות, בכל פעם שהוצגה עסקת חטופים, ממשלת ישראל אישרה אותה ברוב עצום. ברגע שהונחה על השולחן הצעה לסיום המלחמה בתנאים שישראל יכולה להשלים איתה, הממשלה תמכה בה. הסקרים – שבהם נתניהו רשם שיא דווקא אחרי חתימת העסקה – גם מעידים כמה אווילית הייתה הטענה שנתניהו מעוניין במלחמת נצח כי זה הדבר הפוליטי הנכון עבורו. עד אוקטובר 2025, ולא יעזרו כל השקרים, לא הונחה הצעה שמאפשרת לישראל גם לקבל את כל החטופים וגם להימנע מלסגת לגבול הקודם, המדמם. כפי שהסביר מקגרגור כמו לילד מתקשה, כל המתווים כללו נסיגה מיידית מעזה עד החייל הישראלי האחרון, כאשר החטופים משוחררים בטפטוף מייסר שלפי סינוואר לא אמור היה להסתיים לעולם. מי שטוען שאין שום הבדל בין עזה עם חטופים ובלי צה״ל לבין עזה בלי חטופים ועם צה״ל הוא בור או תועמלן, ומוטב להרחיקו מכל גישה לציבור. דומני גם שאותו ציבור שם לב, על אף הניסיונות לערבב אותו, לתופעה מוזרה: אלה שהסבירו במשך שנתיים שמיגרנו את חמאס ולכן אפשר לסיים את המלחמה הם אותם אלה שמסבירים כעת שחמאס חזק מאי פעם והמלחמה היא כישלון. הבוחרים יגבו מחיר מנתניהו על הפער בין הבטחת הניצחון המוחלט שלו ובין המצב בשטח. אך אם יכריחו אותם להכריע בקלפיות בין שתי ברירות לתיאור המצב במזרח התיכון – ניצחון מוחלט או כישלון מוחלט – הם לא יבחרו בכישלון. לטור המלא >>> https://www.israelhayom.co.il/magazine/hashavua/article/21575990

I also remembered Elhanan Kalmanzon, who fell in Be'eri on the morning of October 8, and who months earlier, at one of the demonstrations on Kaplan, someone yelled at him "you draft dodger," because he saw his kippah. Certain parts of that camp invest no effort in argument, only in trying to frame the other opinion as illegitimate. I listened to Brett McGurk in a series of interviews and was reminded again how shallow our discourse is, how biased. Only in such a world can Nitzan Alon, who headed the IDF directorate for the hostage issue, release into the world quotes like "everyone could have been released earlier," without addressing the facts. In such a world one can publish books and "investigations" that present Hamas as eager for deals while Israel is malicious, alienated, determined to fight forever. Hostage families are allowed to say anything at the time (unless it's the Or and Mor families, of course), but for commentators and experts the truth is also an option. Judged by results, and contrary to all the accusations and predictions, every time a hostage deal was presented, the Israeli government approved it by a huge majority. The moment a proposal to end the war on terms Israel could accept was put on the table, the government supported it. The polls – in which Netanyahu reached a peak precisely after the deal was signed – also testify to how foolish the claim was that Netanyahu was interested in an eternal war because it was the right political thing for him. Until October 2025, and all the lies won't help, no proposal was put forward that would allow Israel both to get all the hostages and to avoid withdrawing to the previous, bleeding border. As McGurk explained as if to a slow child, all the frameworks included an immediate withdrawal from Gaza down to the last Israeli soldier, with the hostages released in an agonizing trickle that, according to Sinwar, was never supposed to end. Whoever claims there is no difference between Gaza with hostages and without the IDF and Gaza without hostages and with the IDF is either ignorant or a propagandist, and it's better to keep him away from any access to the public. I also think that the same public has noticed, despite the attempts to confuse it, a strange phenomenon: those who explained for two years that we had crushed Hamas and therefore the war could be ended are the same ones now explaining that Hamas is stronger than ever and the war is a failure. Voters will exact a price from Netanyahu for the gap between his promise of total victory and the situation on the ground. But if they are forced to decide at the ballot box between two options for describing the situation in the Middle East – total victory or total failure – they will not choose failure. In a background review from April 4, 2023, he wrote that the Hamas leadership "validated in internal discourse the strategy of restraint in the Strip and inflaming Judea and Samaria. In the 2023 strategy documents revealed by Israel Hayom on March 25, 2025, he answers in the affirmative two questions: whether economic investment leads to stability, and whether economic stability over time will erode Hamas's power. Two people made a significant contribution to public discourse in Israel this week: Avinatan Or and Brett McGurk. One spent the war in Hamas tunnels; the other spent it in the White House. Both presented, in clear language and based on firsthand experience at the heart of events, two positions that until now have been portrayed in Israel as a death wish, cynical politics, and the abandonment of hostages. Or, who spent two years as a hostage in Gaza’s tunnels, explained in plain Hebrew why disproportionate deals with Hamas would only lead to more kidnappings in the future. McGurk, a senior adviser to Biden, explained in plain English that no such deal had ever truly been on the table until the military sword was at the terrorist organization’s throat. I watched Avinatan Or on *Uvda* and once again felt ashamed of the treatment his mother, Ditza Or, received in real time for daring to say those very same things. She and other parents from the Tikva Forum were portrayed as abandoning their children, while those who pushed for surrender were depicted as some kind of adoptive parents of our hostages. This was yet another example of the distortion whereby those credited with bringing the hostages home were not the soldiers who risked their lives in Gaza, but those who demonstrated to demand that Israel accept Hamas’s terms (terms that, as noted, never actually materialized into a concrete proposal). I was also reminded of Elchanan Kalmanson, who fell in Be’eri on the morning of October 8. Months earlier, at a demonstration on Kaplan Street, someone had shouted “You draft dodger!” at him simply because he was wearing a kippah. Certain elements of that political camp make no effort whatsoever to engage in debate. Instead, they focus entirely on portraying opposing views as illegitimate. I listened to Brett McGurk in a series of interviews and was reminded once again of just how shallow and biased our public discourse has become. Only in such an environment could Nitzan Alon, who headed the IDF’s Hostages and Missing Persons Directorate, make statements such as “We could have freed them all earlier” without being required to substantiate them with facts. Only in such an environment could books and “investigations” be published portraying Hamas as eager to reach agreements, while Israel is depicted as cruel, indifferent, and determined to fight forever. Hostage families should be allowed to say anything in real time (unless, of course, they belong to the Or or Mor families). But for commentators and experts, the truth should also be an option. Judging by the results, and contrary to all the accusations and predictions, every time a hostage deal was presented, the Israeli government approved it by an overwhelming majority. The moment a proposal to end the war was placed on the table under terms Israel could live with, the government supported it. The polls—in which Netanyahu actually reached a new high following the signing of the deal—also demonstrate just how foolish the claim was that Netanyahu wanted an endless war because it was politically advantageous for him. Until October 2025, and no amount of lying can change this, no proposal had been presented that would allow Israel both to secure the release of all the hostages and to avoid retreating to the previous, blood-soaked border. As McGurk explained in terms even a struggling child could understand, every proposed framework included an immediate Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, down to the very last Israeli soldier, while the hostages would be released in an agonizing trickle that, according to Sinwar, was never supposed to end. Anyone who claims there is no difference between a Gaza with hostages but without the IDF, and a Gaza without hostages but with the IDF, is either ignorant or a propagandist—and should preferably be kept as far away from the public as possible. > >
