The EU is Israel's main trading partner, with the United States in second place. Sanctions on trade between Israel and the EU could lead to a genuine economic collapse. In Brussels too I asked whether anyone on Israel's behalf is handling the issue and working with the decision-makers. The answer I got: no one is handling it and nothing is being done. When you connect the dots, a grim picture emerges: the loss of support among the American public, a possible change in the next administration's attitude, resolutions against Israel in the Security Council and sanctions from Britain and the European Union are all part of an erosion of Israel's international standing, which has diplomatic, security and economic consequences. We saw a tangible example of this during Netanyahu's visit to the UN General Assembly in New York. The man, and Israel along with him, has become a leper and a burden on the Western world. Trump met with the president of Turkey, heads of state in the Middle East and many leaders, including Zelensky, but understands that Netanyahu is a burden. The heads of the American high-tech industry and the leaders of the G7 countries are also unwilling to meet with him. This is a long-held belief of Eldar's, the man who always explained why we're wrong and Gaza is right, the Arab affairs correspondent who informed Israel that "Hamas is not a satanic junta" ("Ha'Ir," 16.01.2009), and predicted a chance "to reach a 30-year hudna with it, which is essentially a peace agreement." Had Netanyahu told the cabinet about the conversation with the Emirati ruler, and had Shlomi Eldar and Ruti Yuval been ministers, they would have proposed one thing: economic benefits, and under no circumstances targeted killings. That is exactly what Eldar preached for decades, while opposing every Israeli action. Over the years he attacked even the killing of the arch-murderer "The Engineer" Yahya Ayyash ("a hapless decision that dealt a fatal blow to the entire delicate fabric of the Oslo Accords"), mocked the hunt for tunnels ("instead of looking for them underground, you need to solve the reason so there's no need to dig the tunnel"), denied the value of every IDF operation in the Strip ("only added fuel to the fire... failed to stop the Qassam fire"). After Guardian of the Walls, even a casualty ratio of one and a half terrorists for every civilian drove him out of his mind ("Indeed, the landlord has gone mad"). "We already know that so we don't return there, we must treat your residents as human beings, ease the passage of goods at the crossings and open the airport and the seaport." Tragically, Netanyahu and Bar adopted the Yuval and Eldar method: economic relief in the hope that it would feed the monster that Eldar opposed eliminating by military means all those years. The duo's manipulations, according to which the Shin Bet chief's proposal for "extinguishing with an explosion in Gaza, a preemptive strike" should have been adopted, ignore the fact that there wasn't really such a proposal. After all, that same Bar determined three days before the massacre that "renewing the understandings between Israel and Hamas of quiet in exchange for relief will allow stability to be preserved for a long time." Clearly, had Israel attacked, these two would have been the first to write a book about the bloodlust of the extreme right-wing government for political reasons. And Abu Zaida, "eyes of coal," looked out with him over Netzarim in 2004 and determined that there are terror attacks only because of the settlements. "You are paying with your future and claiming there's no partner." "Maybe we really didn't look hard enough," Eldar repeats after him like a parrot. Sufian and Samir Folk Tales Ltd. Eldar and Yuval wrote a preposterous manifesto on behalf of Fatah, which adopts considerable parts of Hamas's narrative, while relying on a dubious duo that has been spreading falsehoods for decades.
