Naftali Bennett, although he has dived significantly from last year's peak, offers together with Liberman right-wing policy to center-left voters, and together they win three times as many votes as before the massacre. Back then it was National Unity, Yesh Atid, Meretz and Yisrael Beiteinu, and now – Yashar, Together, The Democrats and Yisrael Beiteinu. Gantz was replaced by Eisenkot – seemingly not a particularly significant change, a chief of staff replaced a chief of staff at the head of the camp. And yet the shockwaves from October 7 have an effect here too. Eisenkot is, as is known, a bereaved father from the war. The opposition back then focused on the judicial reform, the current one would be wise to deal only with the Haredi issue. The public has moved significantly away from the instigators of the protest, who are all concentrated in The Democrats party. The massacre greatly distanced the possibility of forming a Change Government 2, because of aversion to the Arab parties and their refusal to call Hamas and Hezbollah terrorist organizations. In the Kan poll this week it turned out that even in the opposition a third support disqualifying Ra'am, the party without which Bennett and Lapid would not have become prime ministers. As is known, the very assumption that the elections at the end of the month will be the most decisive in the history of the state was not voiced here, perhaps the opposite. One of the reasons for this is the enormous gap between the public's positions and the politicians who express them. The public has gone very far to the right, exactly when the disgust, fatigue and disappointment with the right's leaders reached a peak, and the head-on encounter between these two contradictory movements will not be a pleasant sight and will not give birth to a brave new world of any kind. In fact, Netanyahu did the opposition a favor when he insisted on running again. Without him, it would have had great difficulty deciding on a common agenda and would have had to propose an alternative plan to that of the right. Netanyahu's long shadow overshadows the need to say something decisive. For example, about the great challenge of the next term, which is the international implications of the Palestinian issue. The previous term was marked by Gaza, the next – by Judea and Samaria. The question of sitting with Netanyahu yes-or-no spares the need to publish a clear plan for the future of the territories. A hostile Democratic administration, and even before it anti-Israeli European governments, will not hesitate to impose more and more sanctions. Outwardly they will compliment each other and take care not to break the dishes. Inside they will fight over every seat, because every seat that moves from Lapid to Eisenkot, from Eisenkot to Bennett or from Bennett to Lapid doesn't necessarily change the size of the bloc, but it can completely change the balance of power within it. Anyone who doubts this is invited to recall the adventure of the ‘change government’: how it began and how it ended. The significant development following the closing of the candidate lists, therefore, is the merger of Chili Tropper’s party into Eisenkot’s list. It was an intra-bloc contest between Yashar! and Beyachad, but with significant implications for the day after the election. After all, members of ‘Bayit Tzioni’ had previously pledged that they would not support a minority government, even if it were sworn in thanks to the abstention of the Arab parties. Eisenkot’s plan is somewhat reminiscent of what Jewish law calls the prohibition on ‘instructing a non-Jew’ to perform forbidden labor. אני רואה מהבוקר שיש מי ששמחים ומתדרכים כי הטלטלה ב'דגל התורה' עשויה לשנות את הברית החרדית עם גוש הימין ועם נתניהו. אז בואו נפוצץ את הבלון. אין לחרדים אפשרות או עם מי ללכת בגוש השמאל. למעשה את ההכרזות הריקות והאיומים על הליכה עם השמאל גפני משמיע כבר שנים וכמעט בכל מערכת בחירות. ב-2015 הוא הצהיר ש"אם הרצוג יצליח להקים ממשלה - נתמוך בו", אח"כ אמר שהוא לא פוסל את גנץ, ושהתמיכה של יהדות התורה בנתניהו אינה אוטומטית, ולאחרונה הבהיר ש"בניגוד לעבר" הפעם "אני לא עונה מראש שאני הולך עם נתניהו". בינתיים, ולמרבה האירוניה הוא אכן הולך אבל לא עם נתניהו... האמירות המטופשות הללו היו אגב, זרז לנטישת צעירים חרדים את יהדות התורה ומעבר במספרים שלא היו בעבר לאלטרנטיבות כמו הליכוד ועוצמה יהודית. לגבי חוק הגיוס. זה נכון אמנם שנתניהו מרח את הזמן בתחילת הקדנציה, כשלא טרח להעביר את החוק לפני התקציב כפי שהתחייב בהסכם הקואליציוני, אבל צריך לזכור שמי שסיכל את החוק בסוף היו החרדים. גם לו רצו, החרדים לא יכולים לשבת בממשלת שמאל. עם מי יישבו בדיוק? עם מנסור עבאס ויאיר גולן? עם ליברמן והמריצה? עם גלעד קריב, הרפורמים והלהט"ב? אז נכון שכשהשמאל רוצה יש פח מיוחד לאידאולוגיה ויש דף לבן ריק, אבל עכשיו הדף כבר שחור ומלא. שחור משנאה ומלא בגידופים ובהתחייבויות. אז תאמרו מיד, נוכחנו שהתחייבויות זה לא משהו שיעצור בעדם. כדי להזיז את נתניהו הם יסכימו להכל - כולל הכל. עקרונית נכון ויותר מכך, אבל משתי הסיבות העיקריות שמניתי לעיל אין לכך שום היתכנות ריאלית. מצד שמאל - אחרי 07 באוקטובר וקמפיין הרעל שניהלו הם מסונדלים בעניין חוק הגיוס. הם לא יוכלו לתת הצעה טובה יותר משהייתה על השולחן בחודשים האחרונים. (שכזכור אפילו אותה החרדים טרפדו) ומצד החרדים - מעבר לגיוס, אין היתכנות לשבת בקואליציה של שונאי דת רדיקלים, שהבטחותה הבחירות שלהם זה לחרב, לחלל ולטמא את כל הקדוש והיקר. מקווה שח"כ אשר והנציגים החדשים במפלגה ידלגו הפעם על הקשקוש המעיק הזה, יתמקדו בעשיה חיובית ומועילה ויפנימו גם כי הציבור שאותו הם מייצגים הוא ימני ברובו המוחלט.

These stupid statements were, by the way, a catalyst for young Haredim abandoning United Torah Judaism and moving in numbers never seen before to alternatives like Likud and Otzma Yehudit. As for the draft law. It's true that Netanyahu dragged out the time at the beginning of the term, when he didn't bother to pass the law before the budget as he committed to in the coalition agreement, but it must be remembered that the ones who thwarted the law in the end were the Haredim. Even if they wanted to, the Haredim can't sit in a left-wing government. With whom exactly would they sit? With Mansour Abbas and Yair Golan? With Liberman and the wheelbarrow? Your votes are thrown in the trash and sometimes change the outcome of the entire election. No one is immune. Ask Benny Gantz. The man who once touched 38 seats in the polls, was chief of staff, defense minister, alternate prime minister and a real candidate for prime minister, found himself within a few short years looking up at the threshold from below. Yair Lapid too, who in the last term led an opposition party with 24 seats, knew in hard times how fast a party can be sucked down, until the merger with Naftali Bennett and the renewed stabilization pushed the danger away. And Bezalel Smotrich too, who from his point of view can present a phenomenal term with dramatic achievements for settlement and for the right, could not look down at this monster with confidence. The threshold does not operate according to normal political logic. It works on momentum. On buzz. On capricious media. On the sense of who is rising and who is falling. A party can be at four seats in the morning, get three days of negative headlines and start slipping. The moment the label "not passing" sticks to it, a particularly cruel mechanism kicks in: voters are afraid to waste their vote, abandon it for a safer party, the polls drop a bit more and the prophecy fulfills itself. It's a whirlpool. And once you're in it, it's very hard to get out. @@@@@@@@@@ The numbers make the terror of the threshold even more tangible. In the 2022 election there were 4,764,742 valid votes in Israel. The threshold, 3.25%, stood at 154,855 votes. Meretz received 150,793. In other words, only 4,062 people separated it from the Knesset. Four thousand votes in a country of millions of voters, and that was the difference between four seats and zero. Estimates are that in the upcoming election, passing the threshold will require reaching about 165–170 thousand votes. Some understood the magnitude of the task and gave up, like Ayelet Shaked and Gilad Erdan. Few will manage to escape the monster on their own. Most will have to choose: merge, withdraw – or be swallowed. Tropper, for example, is expected to look for the merger that will give him firmer ground. Others may realize at the last moment that they have no real way to reach 170 thousand voters and prefer an honorable withdrawal over crashing at the ballot box. There will also be those who insist on running to the end, convinced the polls are wrong and the public is waiting for them. On Tuesday at ten at night the door will close. The frustration grows for this group when the polls turn out to be a fata morgana: the closer you get, the farther the threshold recedes. The Reservists passed the threshold and then collapsed. The same polls indicated that if they merged with Tropper they would pass – only to dive below again. The same thing happened to Erdan, and before that to Gantz, and afterward to Winter. You put up a building only to discover it was built on a whale that sailed away; you merge only to discover that anything times zero is zero. Even right now, the illusion continues. According to the polls, roughly ten percent are below the threshold, an astonishing number of voters. Is that really the situation? Or do the fractions of a percent of all the parties represent more of a passing mood? Whoever believes, as before October 7, that this time too everything will come down to the question of Netanyahu yes or no, has an easy job. He'll simply explain that there was never a chance to begin with. But what about those who believed that there is demand for the unity merchandise and the third way? Could it be that this is, as economists say, a supply-side problem? Or was it an illusion from the start? The speed with which parties are shot into the world and then forced to line up with the right or left camp, declare loyalty or commit to a framework and then evaporate, suggests that this may not yet be the round of conclusions. That like the 1973 election, another round will still be needed for the market ripples of the surprise and the debacle to hit the old fortifications of the political system and topple them.
